Pattern from Knitty Gritty by Aneeta Patel. Published A&C Black 2008
After a cable knitting class with Jane from Tea and Crafting, I was desperate to practise what I had thought was such an arcane skill, though still not very confident about my abilities. This pattern seemed not too difficult for me.
This little bag has taken me a week or so to knit, on and off. The pattern is easy for experienced knitters but requires concentration so I did a little at a time. I can see where I have dropped a stitch, and where I had to unpick stitches a couple of times when someone was talking to me and I lost count. There’s also a little fraying on one of the cables where my dog chewed the wool, thinking it was a soft toy, but all in all I’m pleased with this little project bag. If I have one regret, it’s that I used such lovely soft wool. Truth be told, I’d rather have been knitting myself a garment with it, but I’m sure that will come in the future. The colour is also rather sombre, but classic I guess.
I managed to follow the pattern with no difficulty except that I felt rather left to my own devices in the making-up. I did not know, for example, whether to sew up the handles to make tubes, or even which stitch to use for attaching them, so it’s a bit improvised and impatient. Nevertheless, I present my most sizeable knitting to date: a bag in which I can keep all the bits and pieces for my next project.
